How to Prepare Kendamil Formula
By Kendamil Ghana · Updated · 6 min read
To prepare Kendamil, add one level scoop (4.3g) of powder to every 30ml of water that has been boiled and cooled to at least 70°C. Shake, cool to body temperature and feed within 2 hours. Here is the full method, step by step.
What you need
- a tin of Kendamil and the scoop inside its lid
- a sterilised bottle, teat, ring and cap
- a kettle or pot and fresh drinking water
- a clean, disinfected surface
Step-by-step: how to make a Kendamil bottle
- Wash your hands and clean the surface you will use.
- Boil at least 1 litre of fresh water. Do not re-boil water that has already been boiled.
- Let it cool for no more than 30 minutes, so it stays at 70°C or above. This temperature kills bacteria that can be present in powdered formula, which is not sterile.
- Pour the water into the sterilised bottle first. Check the level against the markings at eye level.
- Add the powder. Loosely fill the scoop and level it with the straight edge inside the lid. Add 1 level scoop for every 30ml of water. For example, 4 scoops for 120ml.
- Put the teat and cap on and shake until all the powder dissolves.
- Cool the bottle quickly by holding it under cold running water or standing it in a jug of cold water.
- Test the temperature on the inside of your wrist. It should feel warm or cool, not hot.
- Feed within 2 hours, and throw away anything left in the bottle afterwards.
Kendamil scoop and water guide
The ratio is the same for every stage and every range (Classic, Organic, Goat and Comfort):
- 60ml of water + 2 scoops
- 90ml of water + 3 scoops
- 120ml of water + 4 scoops
- 150ml of water + 5 scoops
- 180ml of water + 6 scoops
- 210ml of water + 7 scoops
How much your baby needs per feed depends on their age and appetite. Follow the feeding table on your tin as a guide, feed on demand, and ask your health visitor if you are unsure.
What water should I use in Ghana?
Use fresh water that is safe to drink, and always boil it, even if it is bottled or sachet water. Bottled and sachet water are not sterile.
- If your tap water is safe to drink, boil fresh tap water.
- If it is not, use bottled water that is low in sodium and sulphates, and boil it the same way.
- Do not use water from a water softener, and do not use water that has been boiled more than once.
Sterilising bottles and teats
Sterilise all feeding equipment until your baby is at least 12 months old. First wash bottles and teats in hot, soapy water with a bottle brush and rinse them. Then sterilise them by boiling them in a pan for about 5 minutes, or use a steam, UV or cold-water steriliser following the manufacturer's instructions. Leave everything in the steriliser until you need it.
Making feeds at night or on the go
It is safest to make each feed fresh. To save time, keep freshly boiled water in a clean vacuum flask (it stays hot enough for several hours) and pre-measure powder into a clean, dry formula dispenser. Make the bottle when your baby needs it.
During power cuts, do not rely on the fridge for made-up bottles. Making feeds fresh is the safer choice. For more on this, read how to store infant formula safely.
Why is my Kendamil frothy?
Kendamil is made with whole milk, and the natural milk fats and proteins can make it froth more than other formulas. Let the bottle rest for a minute after shaking, or swirl it instead.
