It can take up to two years to convert a normal farm into an organic one and the outcome of all that hard work and attention to detail means that you can rest assured that the strictest standards on animal welfare are being followed as well as the removal of GMO’s, pesticides and herbicides from the farming process.

We’re proud to say that all of our Organic products are certified by two of the highest standards bodies in the world, the EU Organic Certification, and the Soil Association.

Question 2

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?

Both our Stage 1 and 2 formula contain no fish oil, soy oil, or palm oil. Stage 2 does have slightly more iron to meet the higher iron demands of an infant once they turn 6 months old.

Usually, parents switch to Stage 2 baby formula when their baby is 6 months old and starting to wean. The general taste should remain the same, however this milk includes more minerals for your baby's higher weight.

Please note that although we know our baby formula inside and out, we are not medical professionals. We always recommend checking in with your GP before transitioning to new baby formula or supplementing breast milk with baby formula. Some health professionals may advise you to stay on Stage 1 for 6-12 months.

Question 3

What is the difference between Stage 2 and 3?

If you'd like to continue giving your little one Kendamil after they've turned 1 years old then you can move them on to Stage 3, they will continue to get all the additional vitamins and nutrients of the full cream milk that we uniquely use as the base for our recipe as well as the plant-based DHA and HMOs that were there in Stage 1 and 2 which will to continue to build up their immune system.

Stage 3 is considered a "weaning" baby formula meant to eventually compliment solid food. It has fewer calories and fat than Stages 1 and 2 but has more iron than Stage 2; and like Stages 1 and 2, Kendamil Stage 3 is free of palm oil, fish oil, soy oil, maltodextrin, and starch.

Some parents choose to switch to Stage 3 baby formula when their baby is around 12 months old because it has more protein, and higher levels of some vitamins, and minerals to meet a growing baby's needs. On the other hand, many parents transition directly from Stage 2 baby formula to whole cow’s milk when their baby turns one. Whole cow’s milk should not be given to infants before their first birthday.

How far out are your expiration dates?

We guarantee that whenever we send powdered baby milk to a customer, that baby milk has over 18 months shelf life before it expires. In reality though, most of the baby milk that leaves our factory has 2 years left until the expiration date, which is actually longer than the industry standard of 18 months!

Is this formula whey free?

Accepted Answer

Most of our baby formula contains some form of whey. Whey is a key ingredient because it is the predominant protein in breast milk and it's included in our formula as both cow and goat milk naturally have a higher proportion of another protein, casein.

We always recommend checking in with your GP before transitioning to a new baby formula or supplementing breast milk with baby formula.

What is the whey to casein ratio for stages 1-3 of Kendamil Organic?

The whey to casein ratio for Kendamil Organic Stages 1-3 are as follows:

• Stage 1 (Infant): Whey: Casein = 60:40
• Stage 2 (Follow-on): Whey: Casein = 40:60
• Stage 3 (Toddler): Whey: Casein = 80:20

The reason for this gradual change in the ratio is to reflect the changing nature of breast milk and also to prepare your little one for weaning.

Will whole milk make my child gain weight excessively?

Accepted Answer

Your little one shouldn’t gain any more weight than is usual for their growth from consuming a whole milk based infant formula. 50% of the calories in both breast milk and formula come from fat. Fats are an important source of essential fatty acids (EFA), which are used by the body as building blocks for growth, as well as playing a role in the absorption of a number of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E and K.

Mammalian milk fat is far closer to naturally resembling the fat profile of human breast milk than vegetable oils. These fatty acids are absent in vegetable oils (with the exception of coconut and palm oil). So while most brands as using skimmed milk and a mixture of vegetable oils to provide the fats needed, Kendamil uses whole milk in all of our baby formulas, so we don't need a lot of oils to replace the fat missing when produced using skimmed milk. What are the nutritional benefits of not using fish oil?

Accepted Answer

Avoiding fish oil means we avoid another potential allergen for your little one. We uniquely source our DHA from a plant-based source, marine algae, which means we don't contribute to overfishing, which is linked to destroying ocean food chains and coral reefs. Also, by using a plant-based source of DHA and not fish oil, we are able to make sure our baby formulas are uniquely vegetarian. We're committed to using high quality ingredients, so you'll never find fish oil in our products.

What’s the difference between cow and goat milk?

When compared to cow’s milk, goat milk has several unique benefits which mean that for babies suffering with digestive issues, goat milk formula may offer a gentler, natural alternative.

• Goat milk predominantly contains A2 beta-casein proteins, which are more similar to the proteins found in breast milk and may be easier to digest for sensitive babies.
• Goat is a naturally casein protein-dominant milk, so Kendamil intentionally adds goat whey to rebalance the protein ratio to be whey dominant, matching the ratio of breast milk and helping baby digest faster.
• When baby digests their milk it reacts with their stomach acid, creating curds. Cow’s milk naturally forms slightly larger, firmer curds, whereas goat milk creates softer, smaller, looser curds, similar to breast milk curds. For babies with digestive issues and sensitive tummies, these softer, smaller curds may help them to digest their milk more easily and absorb their nutrients more efficiently.
• Goat milk contains naturally high levels of oligosaccharides (similar to those found in breast milk). These oligosaccharides help to promote the growth of beneficial, healthy bacteria and limit the ability of harmful bacteria to attach to intestinal cells.

Are your products Gluten Free?

All of the baby formula we create is gluten-free, so they present no risk to little ones with a gluten intolerance. However, some of our cereals do contain gluten.

Do any of your products contain probiotics?

None of our baby formulas contain probiotics as probiotics cannot survive over temperatures of 45 degrees and formula should be prepared with boiled water at around 70 degrees. We now have digestive supplement that contains 3 friendly strains of bacteria that are designed to support the development and balance of your little one’s gut microbiome. Kendamil Classic Stages 1 and 2 contain both GOS and FOS, while Kendamil Classic Stage 3, Kendamil Organic Stages 1-3 and Kendamil Goat Stages 1-3 all contain GOS. Inside our baby formulas are ingredients with naturally-occurring HMOs, specifically 3’-GL,4’-GL and 6’-GL which each play important roles in infant immunity.

What are the nutritional benefits of not using palm oil?

Aside from the environmental benefits of avoiding palm oil which we are very passionate about, it's also good news for your little one. Studies suggest that palm oil can have a negative impact on an infant's ability to absorb fats and calcium. Other studies have found that palm oil in baby formula can make stools harder, meaning constipation in some cases. We're committed to using the highest quality ingredients and following the latest research and studies, so you'll never find palm oil in our products.

Why is your milk ‘frothier’ than other brands?

Accepted Answer

The 'frothiness' of our milk is the result of our unique, whole-milk based recipe. All of our formulas use fresh liquid whole milk, rather than powdered skimmed milk, bulking agents, and vegetable oil substitutes that are common with other brands. Our commitment to removing the use of environmentally damaging palm oil means we do not use emulsifiers and foam inhibitors, which are derived from palm oil.

Whilst the milk may still appear slightly foamy this will rise to the top of the bottle when feeding. You can also wait a while for the foam to settle before feeding to baby, just as long as you feed to your baby within 2hrs of preparing the feed.

What is different about the source of fat in Kendamil?

Our baby formula is formulated using the cream of the milk. We get our fats from the same place as breast milk, from milk fats! For fats in our baby milk, we use a blend of whole milk and essential oils. We're different from most other baby formula that fatten up the formula with 100% vegetable oils, like palm oil. At Kendamil, we believe that adding whole milk to provide a natural mammal fat source is by far the best formulation for your baby's needs and it also reduces the amount of vegetable oils we have to use to reach the correct fat content. Additionally, using whole milk means we naturally provide Milk Fat Globule Membrane (or MFGM) which is also found in breast milk. Nevertheless, we do actually use some skimmed milk in our recipe. Infant milk needs a balance of milk proteins as well (milk proteins from whole/skimmed milk + milk proteins from whey) and we use skimmed milk to encapsulate some of the minerals included in our baby formula during the spray drying process.

Iron in Kendamil (general)

All of our first infant milks contain at least 1 mg of iron per 100 kcal. When it comes to U.S. regulations, formulas that are manufactured in the United States under FDA regulation must have between 0.15 mg to 3 mg of iron per 100 kcal. Additionally, if a formula has less than 1 mg of iron per 100 kcal the formula is required to have a label 'Additional iron may be necessary', otherwise the label can say ‚'Infant formula with iron'.

Our baby formulas do not require the labelling 'additional iron may be necessary' since they all have at least 1 mg of iron per 100 kcal.

Are any of your products dairy free?

Here at Kendamil we uniquely use Whole Milk as our source of fat, so all of our formulas contain either cow or goat milk and are not, therefore dairy-free.

We do, of course, recommend checking with your doctor to test for a milk allergy or to address any medical concerns that you may have about dairy.

None of our baby milks are vegan since they all contain either organic cow or goat milk. Kendamil is uniquely certified Vegetarian however.

How can I prepare formula faster?

Accepted Answer

In line with NHS guidance we recommend that you prepare your little one's baby formula fresh every time, right before feeding. However, there are a few tricks you can use to help speed up the formula prep process. You can store freshly boiled tap water in a vacuum flask, which will the water sterile and over 70 degrees until you need to make up a bottle. Just make sure that the water isn't too hot, even after several hours in the flask! You can also pre-measure your formula powder using a milk powder formula dispenser. You can also make sure that all your bottles are washed and sterile at the start of the day. Keep all these items together in a formula prep station in your kitchen. You'll be making up a feed in a flash!

If you have prepared a feed and then stored it in the fridge you must use the formula within 24hrs. Although babies can drink room temperature or even cold baby formula, you may want to warm up the bottle before feeding your baby. This can be done by placing the bottle in a mug of warm water for no more than fifteen minutes. You should always check the temperature of the bottle by placing a few drops on the inside of your wrist: the liquid should be warm but not hot. Never use a microwave when preparing your feeds, as this could cause scalding due to heat pockets formed in the milk when being microwaved.

What type of water I should use to prepare a feed?

In line with NHS advice, we recommend that you always use freshly boiled tap water (that has been cooled down to at least 70 degrees C) when preparing baby formula. The boiling process kills harmful bacteria that may be in the water or in the baby formula powder, but it also keeps as many nutrients in the water as possible. We recommend that you bring at least one litre of fresh tap water to the boil and then leave the water to cool, but for no more than 30 minutes. Tap water is the best water to use to make your baby's formula - make sure to empty out the kettle and fill with fresh water each time you make a feed. You can use bottled water if you don't have access to safe tap water but check that it is low in sodium and sulphates - it is also not sterile and still requires boiling.

Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water. Artificial softened water is NOT suitable as drinking water for infants. Water softeners have little to do with water filtration/purification.

What temperature should I store Kendamil formula at?

No matter which baby formula you've purchased, you should always store both opened and unopened containers in a clean, cool, and dry place, such as a pantry, drawer, or cabinet - try to keep them away from direct sunlight. Do not store containers of baby formula powder in the fridge, as the humidity can cause the baby formula to form clumps. Also, note that powdered baby formula is not suitable for freezing.

Do not expose baby formula containers to extreme heat or extreme cold. As a general rule, we recommend storing baby milk containers at temperatures between 13 and 24ºC. They should definitely not be exposed to temperatures above 35ºC or below 0ºC.

How do I store my formula?

Accepted Answer

No matter which baby formula you've purchased, you should always store both opened and unopened containers in a clean, cool, and dry place, such as a pantry, drawer, or cabinet (away from your stove, oven, heating ducts, and hot water pipes.) Try also to keep them away from direct sunlight. Once opened use your formula within 4 weeks and ensure (when not in use) that the lid is securely closed to prevent any foreign objects or contaminants from getting into your tin. Do not store containers of baby formula powder in the fridge, as the humidity can cause the baby formula to form clumps. Also, note that powdered baby formula is not suitable for freezing.

If you prefer to transfer the powder to a different container, then we recommend transferring it into an airtight container (we think that glass food storage containers work best) and writing the date you opened the formula on the lid.

Question 25

What temperature should the water be when preparing a feed?

Accepted Answer

You should always boil fresh tap water when preparing a feed, but then let it cool for up to 30 minutes so it reaches around 70°C before measuring into your baby bottle and adding the correct number of scoops of formula. Using boiled water of at least 70°C to make up the feed will reduce any risk of your baby becoming unwell with infections like sickness or diarrhea. This is because any harmful bacteria present will be killed at this temperature.

Remember to always check the temperature of a feed before giving to baby - it should be body temperature - you can check this on the back of your wrist.

What is the safest way to prepare formula?

Accepted Answer

Following the NHS Gold Standard guidelines, this is the safest way to prepare your formula:

Fill the kettle with at least 1 litre of fresh tap water (do not use water that has been boiled before).

Boil the water. Then leave the water to cool for no more than 30 minutes, so that it remains at a temperature of at least 70C.

Clean and disinfect the surface you are going to use. It's also important that you wash your hands.

If you are using a cold-water steriliser, shake off any excess solution from the bottle and the teat, or rinse them with cooled boiled water from the kettle (not tap water).

Stand the bottle on the cleaned, disinfected surface. Follow the formula manufacturer's instructions and pour the amount of water you need into the bottle. Double check that the water level is correct. Always put the water in the bottle first, while it is still hot, before adding the powdered formula.

Loosely fill the scoop with formula powder, according to the manufacturer's instructions, then level it using either the flat edge of a clean, dry knife or the leveller provided. Make sure you only use the scoop that comes with the formula. Holding the edge of the teat, put it into the retaining ring, check it is secure, then screw the ring tightly onto the bottle. Make sure the ring is attached firmly.

Cover the teat with the cap and shake the bottle until the powder is dissolved.

It's important to cool the formula so it's not too hot to drink. Do this by holding the bottle (with the lid on) under cold running water, or leaving it in a jug of cold water. Test the temperature of the formula on the inside of your wrist before giving it to your baby. It should be body temperature, which means it should feel warm or cool, but not hot. Use the freshly made feed within 2 hours of preparing it.

If there is any made-up formula left in the bottle after a feed, throw it away.

Why should I boil water?

Powdered formula is not sterile; so, even though tins and packets of formula powder are sealed, they can sometimes contain harmful bacteria that could make your baby ill. Water that hasn't been boiled can also contain bacteria and as a baby's immune system is not as strong nor as well developed as an adult's this means that babies are much more susceptible to illness and infection. Therefore, good hygiene is very important when making up a feed.

In line with NHS guidelines, we recommend that you always use boiled water (that has been cooled down to at least 70 ºC) when preparing baby's formula. The boiling process kills harmful bacteria that may be in the water or in the baby formula powder. We recommend that you bring at least one litre of water to a rolling boil and then leave the water to cool, but for no more than 30 minutes so that it remains at a temperature of at least 70ºC.

Do not use repeatedly boiled water as the balance of minerals in previously boiled water may not be suitable for making up formula feeds.

Question 28

Where do I store my formula when I am travelling?

Accepted Answer

If you need to bring a large quantity of powdered baby formula with you while traveling and are not able to transport it in the tin, then an airtight glass or silicone food container is usually your best bet. For day trips, you could purchase a Tupperware-style powder baby formula dispenser, which can make traveling with a little one a lot easier! You simply pre-measure the amount of baby formula powder that you'd like to take with you into the different compartments, so that you have the exact amount you need to make several on-the-go feeds.

In terms of traveling with prepared baby formula bottles, we recommend that you prepare your little one's baby formula right before feeding, rather than making up bottles in advance. However, we know it's not always possible to give your baby a freshly prepared bottle when you are on the go so you can store freshly boiled water in a vacuum flask, which will stay sufficiently warm until you need to make up a bottle. Just make sure that the water isn't too hot, even after several hours in the flask!

We also offer a Ready to Feed milk in 70ml and 250ml bottles, which many parents take with them on the go.

Question 29

Can I prepare my formula in advance and/or refrigerate the prepared formula?

Accepted Answer

We do not recommend storing pre-prepared bottles of milk in the fridge, as Kendamil follows the guidelines set down by the Department of Health and the NHS who advise that feeds should be made fresh and on demand. Please consult with a healthcare professional if you have any questions or wish to follow a different method of preparation and/or storage.

We recommend that you prepare your little one's baby milk right before feeding. However, if you are pressed for time, you can store freshly boiled water in a vacuum flask, which will stay sufficiently warm until you need to make up a bottle and pre-measure your formula powder into dispenser pots. Just make sure that the water isn't too hot, even after several hours in the flask!

The NHS does state that you can store formula in the fridge for up to 24hrs but if you are able to make a fresh feed, this is better for your baby as there is less chance of bacterial growth developping in your baby's prepared formula.

How do I sterilise my bottles?

Accepted Answer

As advised by the NHS it is important to sterilise all your baby's feeding equipment, including bottles and teats, until they're at least 12 months old. This will protect your baby against infections, in particular diarrhoea and vomiting.

Before sterilising, you need to:

• Clean bottles, teats, and other feeding equipment in hot, soapy water as soon as possible after feeds.
• Use a clean bottle brush to clean bottles (only use this brush for cleaning bottles), and a small teat brush to clean the inside of teats. You can also turn teats inside out then wash them in hot soapy water. Do not use salt to clean teats, as this can be dangerous for your baby.
• Rinse all your equipment in clean, cold running water before sterilising. After washing, sterilise your equipment by placing it in boiling water for around five minutes.

Alternatively, you can use an electric or microwave steam steriliser, a UV Steriliser or a traditional cold-water steriliser, but please read the manufacturer's instructions.

Once everything has been sterilised it's best to leave bottles and teats in the steriliser or pan until you need them.

If you do take them out, put the teats and lids on the bottles straight away.

Wash and dry your hands before handling sterilised equipment or, better still, use some sterile tongs.

When should I be transitioning to formula from breastmilk?

Accepted Answer

The decision to transition from breast milk to formula is a completely personal one -- it is all about what works best for you and your baby! WHO and UNICEF recommend that children initiate breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life.

Some mothers choose to breastfeed for a year or longer, some mothers choose to combination feed using Kendamil and some mums may transition completely from breastfeeding to formula feeding when their baby is around six months old, or when their baby begins to eat solid foods for the first time. Not all mothers breastfeed, and finding a high-quality alternative like Kendamil is a great choice.

For little ones six months or older, Stage 2 baby milk (also known as ‚"Follow-on Milk',) provides complete nutrition and the correct amount of vitamins and minerals for babies at that stage of development. Babies younger than six months should only be fed Stage 1 baby milk.

We recommend transitioning from breastfeeding to formula feeding gradually, to give your baby time to adjust to the new baby milk, and so that your body gets used to making less milk. Babies can taste the difference between breast milk and formula, so trying this approach helps to ease them in.

It can take babies up to two weeks to fully adjust to formula feeding. During this time, gas and constipation are fairly common. One method for transitioning is to replace one breastfeeding session every few days with a formula feed and continue this until you are feeding exclusively with formula or reach your desired feeding outcome.

If you have been bottle-feeding your baby with expressed breast milk, we typically recommend introducing Kendamil gradually by slowly swapping bottles of breast milk with Kendamil, starting with the midday feeds first and not the feeds before bed. This schedule can be alternated a bit based on the number of feeds as some infants will feed for more or less than that which is indicated below: You can follow this schedule for introducing formula:

• Day 1: Feed 2 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are breast milk
• Day 2: Feeds 2 & 3 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are breast milk
• Day 3: Feeds 2, 3, & 4 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are breast milk
• Day 4: Feeds 1, 2, 3, & 4 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are breast milk
• Day 5: All feeds = Kendamil

We always recommend checking in with your GP before transitioning to new baby formula or supplementing breast milk with formula.

Question 33

Can I switch to Kendamil immediately?

Accepted Answer

We generally recommend a transition period of 7-14 days to allow your baby's digestive system to completely adjust to a new formula, even if you are simply moving to another stage of the same formula brand. Gas, constipation, and fussiness are fairly common reactions to a new formula. Because of this, we recommend introducing the new formula gradually by slowly swapping bottles of the current or, 'old', formula with Kendamil, starting with the midday feeds first and not the feeds before bed. This schedule can be alternated a bit based on the number of feedings as some infants will feed for more or fewer feeds than indicated below:

• Day 1: Feed 2 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are old formula
• Day 2: Feeds 2 & 3 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are old formula
• Day 3: Feeds 2, 3, & 4 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are old formula
• Day 4: Feeds 1, 2, 3, & 4 = Kendamil, remaining feeds are current old formula
• Day 5: All feeds = Kendamil

The number of feeds is based on Kendamil Classic Infant Milk's suggested feeding frequency in a 24 hour period for infants between 1-5 months of age.

You can switch to the new formula immediately and prepare all the feeds with the new formula on Day 1 (feedback from parents using Kendamil has shown that switching to all Kendamil bottles within 24 hours is feasible) However, for some infants, it might be easier for their digestive system to transition slowly as described above.

If you're considering switching formula stages, parents can switch to Stage 2 from Stage 1 when their baby is around 6 months old (babies younger than six months should only be fed Stage 1 baby milk). The general taste should remain the same but Stage 2 formula itself includes more vitamins and minerals for your baby's growing needs.

How should I transition from breastfeeding to formula?

It's important to remember that every baby is different, but we recommend transitioning from breastfeeding to formula feeding gradually, to give your baby time to adjust to the new formula, and so that your body gets used to making less milk. Babies can taste the difference between breast milk and formula, so trying this approach helps to ease them in.

It can take babies up to two weeks to fully adjust to formula feeding. During this time, gas and constipation are fairly common. One method for transitioning is to replace one breastfeeding session every few days with a formula feed and continuing this until you are feeding exclusively with formula or reach your desired feeding outcome.

• Day 1: Feed 2 = Kendamil, nurse for remaining feeds
• Day 2: Feeds 2 & 3 = Kendamil, nurse for remaining feeds
• Day 3: Feeds 2, 3, & 4 = Kendamil, nurse for remaining feeds

Yes, you can absolutely use breast milk with our cereals. Our baby cereals come in different flavours and are the ideal starting point for your little one's weaning journey. They're nutritionally balanced with essential vitamins and minerals, and made from great tasting, wholesome infant quality grains and fruit.

My baby has lactose intolerance, what would you recommend?

For any baby with a diagnosed intolerance or allergy we would always recommend you consult with your GP or healthcare professional to make sure you're giving baby the most suitable formula for their personal diagnosis and need.

Question 41

My baby has colic what would you recommend?

Colic is distressing for both parents and baby but does usually resolves itself by the age of 3 to 4 months and isn't something to be concerned about. Although not a lot is understood about the causes of colic, some theories suggest it may be linked to baby struggling to digest their milk well or the possibility of an allergy. For some babies Goat milk formula may be easier to digest as it predominantly contains A2 beta-casein proteins (which are more similar to the proteins found in breast milk) and it also forms softer curds in their stomach helping them to digest it quicker and absorb their nutrients more efficiently so this may be something that you wish to consider. We also have a Kendamil Comfort Milk which may help ease your baby's discomfort. Our Comfort milk has a reduced lactose content (compared to our Classic range) and contains partially hydrolysed whey protein and starch, and which means the proteins have been broken down into smaller fragments, making them easier to digest. If you are concerned about the formula your baby is currently consuming and are considering switching to another formula due to their symtoms of colic we would always recommend talking to your GP first to consider other causes behind your baby's symptoms. Question 42

My baby has green/ watery stools, is this normal?

Accepted Answer

If other medical conditions have been ruled out, green stool colour is not a cause for concern and is perfectly normal. When food goes through the digestive tract quickly, then bile does not get digested, leading to a greenish colour in the stool.

This is not cause for concern as it may mean Kendamil is less likely to cause constipation. The green, watery stool is one of the most commonly reported types of stools for little ones on our formulas as our formulas don't contain any palm oil, unlike other formulas, where palm oil can often lead to constipation/firmer stools.

My baby is gassy, what would you recommend?

If your baby is gassy, you'll notice that they pass a lot of gas and seem to feel better afterward. Gas troubles often start right away or when babies are just a couple of weeks old. Fortunately, most babies outgrow them by the time they're 4 to 6 months old, though for some, baby gas can last longer.

Almost all babies get gas as they often swallow air when feeding. Gas happens when air gets into the digestive tract, such as when a baby sucks on a bottle and it is common for them to pass gas 13-21 times each day!

Babies have plenty of chances to swallow air, like when they:

• Eat, whether food comes from a breast or bottle.
• Suck a dummy/pacifier.
• Cry

When air gets trapped in your baby's belly, you may notice that they:

• Burp
• Get fussy
• Are bloated
• Cry
• Fart
• Have a hard tummy

If your baby is generally happy and only fusses for a few seconds while passing gas, that's a sign that it's normal. When you're nursing or bottle-feeding, try to keep the baby's head higher than their stomach. One of the easiest ways to ease gas pains is to burp them during and after they feed. If they don't belch right away, wait for a few minutes and then try again. If you're bottle-feeding, switch to a slower-flow teat.

Another recommendation is to gently massage your baby, pump their legs back and forth (like riding a bike) while they're on their back, or give them tummy time, but not after a feed (watch them while they lie on their stomach). A warm bath can also help them get rid of extra gas.

If you are planning to switch baby formula, or have already switched, please be aware that it may take a little while for your baby to completely adjust to the new formula. We generally recommend a transition period of 7 - 14 days during which you can gradually introduce the new baby formula by introducing it with feeds of the ‘old’ existing baby formula.

Gas and constipation are fairly common side effects that can occur until your baby adjusts.

Question 44

My baby is constipated what would you recommend?

It's normal for babies to strain when pooing, and sometimes their faces turn red. But if baby isn't going regularly enough (under 8 weeks should be pooing every 2-3 days) or they're finding it distressing when they try to poo it could be a sign your baby is constipated.

Signs of constipation:

• Pooing fewer than 3 times a week
• Has hard, pebble-like stools
• Smelly wind and poo
• Has a firm tummy

Question 45

My baby has reflux what would you recommend?

Reflux is common in babies, as the muscles in their oesophagus have not fully developed. It will pass as they get older. You can try other things before switching baby formula, such as giving your baby smaller feeds more often, making sure your baby burps, and holding your baby upright both during and after feeding. We recommend reading the following article from the NHS - here .

Here's what we know on reflux (for all babies, not just breastfed babies):

• Spitting up usually occurs right after a baby eats, but it may also occur 1-2 hours after a feeding.
• Half of all 0–3-month-old babies spit up at least once per day.
• Spitting up usually peaks at 2-4 months.
• Many babies outgrow spitting up by 7-8 months.
• Most babies have stopped spitting up by 12 months.

Kendamil doesn't have an anti-reflux formula. The reason why is that our team believes that it's not necessary to produce one when our milks are formulated with the primary ingredient of whole milk. Instead of whole milk, other brands fatten their baby milk with vegetable oil fats, like palm oil, which evidence suggests can be more difficult on digestion.

By starting with high quality ingredients, we don't expect ever to have to produce an anti-reflux formula.

We always advise parents to consult with their child's GP or healthcare professional before switching baby formula or introducing formula for the first time, particularly if their baby has feeding issues. If you decide to switch, it may take a little while for your baby to adjust entirely to new baby formula. We generally recommend a transition period of 7 - 14 days, during which you can gradually introduce the new formula to baby.

My baby has an allergy what would you recommend?

If you suspect your baby has an allergy it's very important to consult with your child's GP and they can then refer them for further tests.

There are many different symptoms of cow's milk protein allergy, including diarrhoea, constipation, eczema, hives, rash, reflux, vomiting, refusing to feed, runny nose, cough, and general symptoms such as tiredness and sleeping problems.

We currently do not create any hypoallergenic formulas, but we've received positive customer feedback here about babies with milk protein sensitivity doing well on Kendamil Comfort Milk which contains partially hydrolyzed whey protein and starch and has a reduced lactose content too. This all means that the proteins have been broken down into smaller fragments, making them easier to digest. You can learn more about our Comfort Milk here .

Another popular alternative formula is Kendamil Goat formula which you can learn all about here . However, please take note that some protein structures are found in both cow's milk and goat's milk, so a child with cow's milk sensitivity may also have a sensitivity to goat's milk.

Again, please consult with your paediatrician if you are considering switching baby formula because of a possible allergic reaction.

If you are planning to switch baby formula or have already switched, please be aware that it may take a little while for your baby to adjust to the new formula completely. We generally recommend a transition period of 7 - 14 days, during which you can gradually introduce the new baby formula by introducing feeds alongside the ‘old’ baby formula.
